The Cinque Terre: a more intimate and authentic Liguria

About an hour away from Genoa, on the east coast between Moneglia and La Spezia, we encounter one of the most unspoiled and extensive natural and semi-natural Mediterranean areas in Liguria: the Cinque Terre.

This picturesque stretch of coastline stretches for about 15 kilometers between the villages of Monterosso al Mare and Riomaggiore and owes its name to the five characteristic towns that dot the coast: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

These enchanting towns are famous for their picturesque colorful houses overlooking the sea, cobblestone streets, terraced vineyards overlooking the sea (it has been estimated that the characteristic dry stone walls reach in total the extent of the famous Chinese wall) and spectacular panoramic views.

These five localities, despite their tourist popularity, have retained much of their traditional and authentic character. This is due to mainly historical and geomorphological reasons that have prevented excessive building expansion and the construction of additional main roads

The entire Cinque Terre region was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 to preserve and protect its unique natural and cultural landscape.

The villages of the Cinque Terre

The first village is Monterosso al Mare, known for its sandy beach and crystal clear waters. The borgo is divided into two parts: the old part with the quaint narrow streets and alleys, and the new part with restaurants and tourist activities. Monterosso al Mare is the largest village and offers many opportunities for relaxation and outdoor activities.

The second village is Vernazza, which is built around a picturesque harbor and offers a charming and romantic setting. The scenic trail connecting Vernazza to Monterosso al Mare is one of the most beautiful and famous hiking trails in the area.

Corniglia is the third village and differs from the others because it is situated on a high cliff and has no direct access to the sea. However, it offers spectacular views of the Cinque Terre and the surrounding landscape.

Manarola, the fourth village, is one of the most photographed because of its colorful houses clinging to the cliffs. The harbor is a great place for swimming and enjoying the sun.

Finally, Riomaggiore is the fifth village and is distinguished by its narrow streets leading to the sea and its picturesque porticoes. Riomaggiore is a charming place, perfect for walking around and soaking up the atmosphere of the Cinque Terre.

The Cinque Terre among vineyards, trails and cuisine

The natural beauty of the Cinque Terre is impressive, with sheer cliffs overlooking the sea and terraces planted with vineyards, where one of the region’s most famous wines, “Sciacchetrà,” is produced. This is a raisin wine, thousands of years old, which in recent years has been recognized as a Slow Food Presidium.

The area also offers an extensive network of hiking trails, including the famous“Blue Trail,” which connects all five villages and offers breathtaking views. The first of these trails, the one leading from Rio Maggiore to Manarola is the famous “Via dell’Amore.”

In addition to the natural wonder, the local cuisine of the Cinque Terre is a treat for the palate, whose typical dishes include fresh pasta, fresh fish, Genoese focaccia, and pesto, one of the most typical gastronomic products of Liguria.

The people of Cinque Terre, known for their hospitality and love of their land, will welcome you with warmth and authenticity.

The Cinque Terre will offer you a unique and unforgettable experience with their combination of natural beauty, culture, history and cuisine. Visiting these localities is a journey through time, a plunge into the tradition and simplicity of a way of life that endures the passage of years.
