The “Christ of the Abyss” is a monumental underwater statue located off the coast of San Fruttuoso, near the town of Camogli, a few kilometers from Genoa.
This unique and iconic artwork is a tribute to the memory of those who lost their lives at sea and a symbolic representation of hope and peace. It depicts Jesus Christ with open arms, symbolizing his love and mercy for humanity.
Christ of the Abyss: genesis of the work
The Christ of the Abyss statue was first installed on August 22, 1954, thanks to the initiative of underwater pioneer Duilio Marcante and his friend sculptor Guido Galletti.
Its creators dedicated this work to their friend Dario Gonzatti, a precursor of scuba diving who died at sea in San Fruttuoso Bay itself.
The statue is made of bronze and rests on a concrete base. It stands about 17 meters deep and is about two and a half meters tall. To obtain the bronze for the statue, medals, naval elements (even propellers from American submarines donated by the U.S. Navy) and bells were cast. Following Marcante’s death, a plaque was placed on the base of the statue in his memory.
Christ of the Deep is maintained by divers and volunteers who are dedicated to preserving this iconic statue and the surrounding ecosystem.
The Christ of the Deep is not just an underwater statue
Every year, numerous divers and snorkelers visit the site to admire the Christ of the Deep and pay homage to its symbolic importance. Diving around the statue offers a unique experience, allowing divers to feel part of a moment of contemplation and connection with spirituality and nature. This particular underwater destination has also become a point of interest for underwater photographers, capturing the ethereal atmosphere of the Christ surrounded by marine waters.
In addition to its religious significance, Christ of the Deep is also an important landmark for marine conservation. The site serves as a refuge for numerous species of fish and other marine creatures, contributing to the biodiversity of the area. However, over the years, environmental threats such as pollution and climate change have put this fragile ecosystem at risk.
The Christ of the Deep is thus more than just an underwater statue. It is a symbol of faith, memory, protection and union between man and the sea. Its presence underwater embodies the profound relationship between humanity and the marine environment, inviting all who visit to reflect on the beauty of nature and the need to preserve it for future generations.
